| Williams, Davis win gold at USA Championships; Bailey, Lee win
in Jamaica
A pair of former Barton County Community College track and field
stars grabbed gold at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
over the weekend in Palo Alto, Calif. Barton County had 9 former
athletes place at the Championships and one current athlete place
in the junior portion of the meet. Bernard Williams and Walter
Davis both won gold at the event with Williams winning the 100m
dash and Davis winning the long jump.
The top three places in each event qualify to
compete in the Wolrd Outdoor Track and Field Championships
in Paris from Aug. 23-31.
Williams,
who still holds the Barton County record in the 100m at 10.03
set
in 1998, was impressive the entire event. Williams
won his 1st round heat with the 2nd fastest overall time, won his
semifinal heat with the fastest time, then captured the gold, defeating
world record holder Tim Montgomery in their first head-to-head
battle of the weekend. Williams won the event with a 10.11 to Montgomery’s
10.15. Jon Drummond was 3rd at 10.18. Another former Cougars, Aaron
Armstrong, took 8th. The USA Outdoor title is the first for Williams,
who had a runner-up finish in 2001.
Williams was also slated to run in the 200m, but dropped out prior
to the semifinals. Erick Wilson, who just won the 100m and 200m
at the 2003 NJCAA Championships, did make the finals of the 200m,
taking 7th place.
Davis
continued to show he is one of the best jumpers in the United
States by taking 1st in the long jump and 2nd in the triple jump.
Davis actually tied for the gold medal in the long jump with Dwight
Phillips. Davis jumped 27-0.5 on his 2nd jump of the prelims. That
mark was tied by Phillips on his final jump on the day. John Moffitt,
a 2002 graduate of Barton, took 8th. It was the first long jump
title for Davis at the USA Outdoor Championships. Davis still holds
the long jump record at Barton County at 26-9 3/4 set in 2000 and
is 3rd on the triple jump list at 56-0.5.
Davis,
who won the triple jump USA Outdoor Championships last year,
took 2nd this year, missing out on gold by just more than
one inch. Davis and Kenta Bell hooked up a duel that saw Davis
take an early lead only to see Bell grab it away before the finals.
On the next-to-last jump in the finals, Davis retook the lead with
a leap of 57-7. Bell, who jumped immediately behind Davis, bested
that on the very next jump, going 57-8.5 to win the gold. Third
place also went to a former Cougar as Tim Rusan won the bronze
with a jump of 56-4.75. Rusan was runner-up to Davis in 2002.
Derrick Brew, who still holds the Barton County record in the
400m at 44.53 set in 1998, took 4th at the USA Outdoor Championships
in the event. Brew cruised to heat wins in the 1st round and semifinals.
In the finals he ran a 45.05 to take 4th. Tyree Washington won
the race in 44.33.
Floyd Thompson also took 4th in the 800m. Thompson, the record
holder at Barton indoors in the 600y and 600m, never took higher
than 3rd in the two preliminary races but came on strong in the
finals. Thompson ran a 1:46.78 in the finals, missing 3rd by .02.
Other
former Cougars who did not place at the event were Adam Judge
(14th – hammer throw), Erick Newby (10th – triple
jump), Armstrong (1st round – 200m), and Wilson (1st round – 100m).
On
the women’s side, Hyleas Fountain chose to skip her best
event – the pentathlon – and compete in the high jump
and long jump. It wasn’t the best weekend for the 2002 Barton
graduate and recent winner of the NCAA pentathlon for Georgia.
Fountain fouled all three long jump efforts and missed her first
three attempts in the high jump. Angel Heath took 23rd in the long
jump.
The lone current Cougar at the meet was Dexter Faulk, who took
2nd in the 110m hurdles in the junior division. Faulk, the reigning
NJCAA Champion in the 110m hurdles, took 2nd with a time of 13.75.
Kenneth Ferguson of South Carolina won the event in 13.60.
Several
former Cougars also competed in the Jamaican Nationals this past
weekend,
winning more hardware. Aleen Bailey continued
her great running by capturing the Jamaican titles in the 100m
and 200m. That matched her effort at the recent NCAA Championships
where she doubled up for South Carolina. Bailey won the 100m in
a time of 11.08, besting the 2nd place time of 11.20. Another ex-Cougar
was 3rd as Beverly McDonald continues to run well in her 30’s,
with a 3rd place effort of 11.24. All the runners were aided by
the fact that Veronica Campbell, a 2003 graduate of Barton, skipped
the event due to a minor injury.
Bailey
took the 200m in 22.59, besting two other former Cougars. Juliet
Campbell
and McDonald, both of whom ran for Barton in the
early ‘90’s, came in 2nd and 3rd. Campbell ran a 22.69
and McDonald a 23.05.
Another former Cougar that won gold was Suzette Lee, who captured
gold in the triple jump. Lee, who holds the Cougars’ record
I the event at 44-11, won with a leap of 46-9.25.
Chris
Pinnock, the Barton County record holder in the 110m hurdles,
took 2nd
in that event at the Jamaican Nationals. Pinnock ran a
13.59. Maurice Wignall won in 13.54. Pinnock recently took 2nd
at the NCAA meet for Texas A&M as well.
Mardrea Hyman took 2nd in the 800m run, finishing the race in
a time of 2:03.66. Hyman still holds the record at Barton in the
1500m set in 1992 at 4:23.51. Her name is also in the Top 5 at
Barton in several other distance races.
Current Cougar Steven Mullings took 4th in the 200m in 20.65 and
just missed the finals of the 100m.
Other
former Cougars who placed in Jamaica were Dionne Rose-Henley
(6th, 100m
H – 13.22), Camille Robinson (5th, 400m H – 57.78),
and Shellene Williams (6th, 400m – 52.68).
