Facey, Bailey, Mullings all earn gold on 4x100m relays
Three more former Barton Community College track stars earned a gold medal at the 12th annual IAAF World Championships on the next to last day of competition in the 4x100m relays. Simone Facey and Aleen Bailey both ran on the Jamaican women’s winning team – representing exactly half of the team. Steve Mullings ran the opening leg for the Jamaican men in the 4x100m as they also captured gold.
Those efforts Saturday in Berlin wrapped up a very successful 9 days of competition for several athletes that have run track at Barton. In addition to the relay golds won by ex Cougars, 2009 sophomore Ryan Brathwaite won a gold medal in the 110m hurdles for Barbados. Another member of last year’s Barton team – Alonso Edward – took silver in the men’s 200 for Panama. Also winning silver were former Cougars Veronica Campbell-Brown in the women’s 200m for Jamaica and Tyson Gay in the men’s 100m for the United States.

Campbell-Brown 2nd in women’s 200m; Henry 4th in men’s 400m
The 200m gold medal at the World Championships once again eluded former Barton sprint star Veronica Campbell-Brown. The winner of the event at the past 2 Olympic Games is still looking for that same World Championships medal after taking silver at the 12th annual IAAF Championships in Berlin Friday. Campbell took 2nd to Allyson Felix, who has now won gold in 200m at the past 3 World Championships in what has turned into quite a duel between the 2 runners. Former Cougar Simone Facey took 6th.
Tabarie Henry, a sophomore for Barton this past season, came in 4th at the World Championships in the 400m for the men, just missing a medal. Henry’s race capped the individual events for Barton athletes and former athletes with one gold medal, three silver medals and a three more 4th place finishes. Some former Cougars will still take part in the relays over the next couple of days.

Brathwaite World Champion at 110m hurdles; Edward 2nd in 200m
The world now knows Ryan Brathwaite.  Before leaving for Berlin and the IAAF World Championships, Brathwaite, a sophomore for the Barton Community College track team last season, commented in an interview “I just want to get out there and show the world who I am.” That he did and them some by winning the Gold Medal in the 110m high hurdles at the 12th annual event in one of the most exciting races of the entire week. Another Cougar from last season, Alonso Edward let the world know who he is as well, taking 2nd in the 200m men’s final to track super star Usain Bolt – who broke yet another world record.
Two former Cougars made the finals of the women’s 200m as the 2-time Olympic Gold medalist Veronica Campbell-Brown and Simone Facey each advanced to Friday’s final. Another ex-Barton track star Laverne Jones-Ferrette just missed the finals with the 9th best semifinal time. Campbell and Facey will join Tabarie Henry – yet another member of the 2009 team – in finals competition Friday as Henry runs in the 400m finals for the men.

Edward, Mullings, Henry all reach World Championship finals
As the 12th annual IAAF Track and Field World Championships in Berlin reached its midway point Wednesday the number of Barton athletes competing is reaching a peak as well. Three Cougars – two from last year’s team and one former Barton star – all reached the finals of their event on the 5th day of competition. Alonso Edward and Steve Mullings each made it to the finals of the 200m while Tabarie Henry will be running the finals of the 400m. It will be the 1st finals for all 3 at the World Championships.
Other impressive efforts from Wednesday including moving all 3 former Cougar women into the semifinals of the 200m in 2-time Olympic Gold medalist in the event Veronica Campbell-Brown, fellow Jamaican Simone Facey and Laverne Jones-Ferrette of the Virgin Islands. The first Cougar to compete on the day – 2009 sophomore Ryan Brathwaite – had little trouble in reaching the semifinals of the 110m hurdles as all 7 athletes that competed for the Cougars during their careers had good days on the track.

Edward, Mullings cruise to 200m semis; Henry wins 400m heat
Alonso Edward and Steve Mullings both breezed into the semifinals of the men’s 200m at the 12th IAAF World Championship in Track and Field Tuesday in Berlin. The duo each won their 1st 2 heats on the way to the semifinals. Tabarie Henry also won his heat in the 400m to advance to the semifinals. Tyson Gay did not run in the 200m, scratching to protect a groin in injury that will require surgery after the World Championships. Another former Cougar, Aaron Armstrong, did not make it out of the opening round of the 200m. Leevan Sands just missed a medal in the triple jump, placing 4th by the narrowest of margins on a very busy for current and former Barton Community College track stars.

Campbell misses medal, takes 4th in 100m at World Championships
Veronica Campbell failed to defend her 2007 gold medal at the IAAF World Championships Monday at Berlin. In fact, Campbell didn’t even collect a medal in the event, taking 4th in a season-best 10.95. Aleen Bailey, another former Barton Community College track star, took 8th in the race. Tuesday will bring the men’s 200m and several former and one current Barton Cougar taking part. Tabarie Henry – a Barton graduate this past season – will compete as well as ex Cougar Leevan Sands in the 400m and triple jump.

Gay sets US mark at 9.71, finishes 2nd to Bolt’s world record 9.58
Tyson Gay completed Sunday by running the 3rd fastest time ever in the 100m – but did not win the race. Gay, competing in the 12th annual IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Berlin, ran a United States record 9.71 in the finals but world record holder Usain Bolt bested his previous world record with a mind boggling time of 9.58. Bolt set the world record last year at the Olympics at 9.69. Other action Sunday saw former Cougars Leevan Sands reach the finals of the men’s triple jump while Veronica Campbell-Brown and Aleen Bailey both made the semifinals in the 100m.

Edward, Brathwaite, Henry to join several former Cougars at World Championships
Three members of the 2009 Barton Community College track team will join several former Cougars over the next several days at the 12th annual IAAF World Championships in Berlin. Alonso Edward, Ryan Brathwaite and Tabarie Henry – all Cougars in 2009 – will take part in the biggest international track meet of the season. They will be joined by 8 more former Cougars, once again giving Barton double digit representation at the event. Included in that list of former Cougars is the defending champion for the men in the 100m and 200m in Tyson Gay as well as defending 100m champion Veronica Campbell. The 10-day World Championships get underway Saturday and will run through the August 23.

Barton men come up short in quest for NJCAA Outdoor Track title
The Barton Community College men’s track and field team came up just short in its quest for a return to the top of the NJCAA track world. The Cougars came in 2nd at the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Hutchinson this past weekend missing the title by 4 1/2 points. Barton had its chances in a battle with South Plains College (Texas) but couldn’t quite make up all the projected 10-point deficit the Cougars entered the meet with. South Plains won the meet with 136 1/2 points to Barton’s 132. The title for South Plains was the 3rd in a row for the Texans. The Cougar men did crown 5 champions with Max Alonso winning two NJCAA titles in the throwing events. Barton spent most of Saturday playing catch-up to the Texans and still had an outside shot in the final event of the day. Five Top 15 times in the world were set in the sprinting events at the Championships – 3 by Cougars.

Barton women take 2nd at NJCAA Outdoor Track Championships
The Barton Community College women’s track and field team turned in a good performance this past weekend, coming in 2nd at the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Hutchinson. South Plains College (Texas) won the championship with 142.33 points, well ahead of Barton’s 94. The Cougars also easily outdistanced Central Arizona, which was 3rd with 76. Central Arizona was projected to place 2nd and Barton 3rd so it was a very good weekend for the Cougars. The women won 3 events with Jasmine Simmons just missing a repeat double in the jumping events. Andrea Southerland defended her title in the 400m hurdles, setting a school record.
