Barton men take 6th in NJCAA National Tennis Championships
The Barton County Community College tennis team wrapped up its 2005 season with a 6th place finish at the NJCAA National Tennis Tournament this past week in Plano, Texas. The Cougars scored 25 in the meet – just 2 places from 4th place where Vincennes (Ind) University finished with 27 points. Laredo won the meet with 49 points, leading a trio of 3 Texas schools in the top 3. Tyler took 2nd with 42 points and host Collin County was 3rd with 39.

Bwalya takes over Barton County tennis coaching position
The Barton County Community College tennis team is under the direction of a new coach, but a familiar face. Sydney Bwalya took over men’s and women’s tennis programs at the school at the beginning of April, replacing Mark Lewis, who left for a job in North Carolina.

Despotovski, Hereson win ITA National Doubles Title; Thornewill 4th in singles
For the past few years the Barton County Community College men’s tennis team has been one of the top teams in nation. This year the Cougars are beginning to have the look of erasing the ‘one of the’ portion of that statement. The Cougars served notice on the rest of the NJCAA with an impressive showing at the ITA Fall National in Fort Meyers, Fla. this past weekend by doing something no previous Barton County team member had done before – win a Fall National title.
That distinction belongs to sophomore standouts Kruno Despotovski and Loic Hereson. They teamed to win the doubles portion of the Fall National meet that includes junior colleges from across the country – including California, which does not compete in NJCAA events. Simon Thornewill also had a great showing at the event, taking 4th in singles.

Cougar to host ITA Fall Regional
Barton County Community College will be hosting two of the 57 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships played across the country Sept. 24-26. The Wilson/ITA Central Region Men's and Women's Championships hosted by Barton will feature the top NJCAA schools in the region. The singles and doubles champions from this weekend's tournament advance to the Oct. 14-17 ITA National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. The event hosted by the Cougars will be held in Wichita.
