Barton impressive in 4-1 win over Mavericks
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team turned in an impressive effort Thursday night on the turf at Great Bend High School with a 4-1 win over Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa. The No. 10 ranked Cougars handed the Mavericks – ranked most of the season – just their 4th loss of the year. Barton has now won 10 straight games and improved to 12-2 on the season. The Cougars will be on the road Saturday for a contest that will go a long ways to deciding the Jayhawk Conference Champion this season when they travel to Johnson County. Barton is currently riding a 42-game Jayhawk Conference unbeaten streak that has seen Barton to 40-0-2. Johnson and Barton are the only two unbeatens in the conference with Garden City close behind with just 1 loss.
Highlights
Barton scored 3 times in the opening half on a cold, breezy night in Great Bend. Northern Oklahoma scored 1st in the contest when Kemal Malcolm finished in the box less than 5 minutes into the contest. But the Cougars weren't behind for long as Lynton Pieters made it 1-1 when Kevin Ellis stole the ball off a foul and found Pieters in the box for the finish. The early scoring frenzy had one more goal with Ellis beating the defense down the field and scoring just more than 10 minutes into the game. Barton would not trail again.
The Cougars made it 3-1 prior to halftime with when Harry Newman scored off a direct free kick from defender Larry Mason. Mason booted it from just inside midfield to Newman, who scored with just more than 3 minutes left in the opening half.
The final goal of the night was a highlight goal as Mason recorded his 2nd assist on a long pass to Ellis, who flicked the ball past the keeper near the top of the box, then drilled it home into an empty net for a 4-1 lead with 15 minutes left in the contest.
Barton will put that 42-game unbeaten streak to the test Saturday against a 7-0 Johnson team that has but 2 conference games left. Barton is 6-0 in the Jayhawk and Garden City is 5-1.
