Newman sets school mark with 5 goals in 11-1 win over Hesston
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team had an easy afternoon Monday, rolling to an 11-1 win over Hesston in Region VI action at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. During that contest, sophomore Harry Newman booted in 5 goals to set a school record for the Cougars. Friday night Barton won 5-0 in Jayhawk Conference action over Neosho at Great Bend’s Memorial Stadium when Kevin Ellis scored 4 times. The Cougars are now 10-2 overall this season and 6-0 in the region. Barton will look to keep that unbeaten Jayhawk mark alive at Cloud Wednesday.
Highlights
Newman got the Cougars off and going just 6 minutes into the contest when he scored from the top of the box on a pass from Martin Narvaez. After a Lynton Piertise goal to make it 2-0, Newman found the net two more times and a 4-0 lead for the Cougars 30 minutes into the contest. Newman would tie the record of 4 goals in a game when he made it 7-1 15 minutes into the 2nd half. Five minutes later he became the only player in Barton history to net 5 goals when he scored on a cross in the box from Leandro Reis for an 8-1 lead. The old mark of 4 was set by Desmond Yankey in 2005 and Ellis just one game prior.
Ricardo Yeverino and Dula Fadis each added two goals in the win while Piertise and Ellis both had one. Ellis, Tom Shaw, and Reis all had a pair of assists as well. Barton put 29 shots on goal out of a total of 45. Hesston got off just 7 shots the entire game, putting 2 on goal.
In the 5-0 win over Neosho, it was Kevin Ellis who had the hot foot and temporarily put his name at the top of the goals in a game chart. Ellis tied Yankey with a 4-goal effort in the win – two coming off headers on corner kicks. Shaw added a goal and an assist and Reis had 3 assists in the win. The Cougar defense allowed Neosho just 4 shots the entire game, two of which were on goal.
