Barton showdown with Garden set; beats Cowley in Region VI opener 4-1
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team took care of business Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium in Great Bend with a 4-1 win over Cowley to start Region VI post-season play. The win set up a semifinal showdown between men’s soccer rivals Barton and Garden City. The two met in an epic championship game last year in the region with Garden winning on penalty kicks after the two teams battled 1-1 through two overtimes. Garden moved into the semifinals with a 3-2 overtime win over Kansas City Kansas. The battle will take place Halloween night in Topeka at 6:30.
Highlights
Cowley scored 1st in the contest at Great Bend High School, putting direct free kick into the net just 1:12 into the contest. Marko Bukva scored from 30 yards out over the top of Josh Euell for a 1-0 Tiger lead. It didn’t last long, however, as Kevin Ellis came right back with a goal for Barton on a pass in the box from Harry Newman. Ellis took the ball about 15 yards out on the left side and drove the ball into the net with a left-foot finish and a tie score at 1-all 4 1/2 minutes later.
Tom Shaw gave Barton’s its 1st lead of the contest midway through the opening half when he took a pass from Leandro Reis and fired a shot from 40 yards out directly in front of the goal. The ball bounded off the cross bar and ricocheted down into the goal. Barton added a 3rd 1st half goal when Ellis scored off a corner kick from Reis with just more than 2 minutes left in the half.
The lone goal of the 2nd half came with 20 minutes left in the contest. Luciano Brilho started the surge down field, feed Reis, who quickly flicked the ball to Dula Fadis. Fadis beat the keeper one-on-one for a 4-1 lead and final goal of the night. Barton dominated the ball during the game, launching 30 shots to just 4 for Cowley. Of those 30, the Cougars were able to put 14 on goal while the Tigers had just 2 on goal.
That brings about the 4th match up in the past 2 season between the Barton Cougars and Garden City Broncbusters men’s soccer teams. Barton won a 1-0 decision earlier this year in Garden. Last season during the regular season the clubs battled to a 1-1 tie in Great Bend before doing likewise in the Region VI title game with Garden advancing on the penalty kicks. The winner will be the favorite to in the finals as No. 1 seed Johnson County was upset in the opening round by 8th seeded Allen County, 3-1. Allen will play the 4th seed Cloud in the other contest. Cloud defeated 5th seeded Neosho 2-0.
Barton and Garden will play in the final contest of the day Saturday at Hummer Park in Topeka. Allen and Cloud will kick off at 4 pm in the 1st men’s semifinal with Barton-Garden slated to go at 6:30 pm. The two women’s semifinal contest will be earlier in the day.
