Barton holds on for 2-1 Jayhawk win over Coffeyville
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team hung on for a hard-fought Jayhawk Conference win Tuesday at Cougar Fields, edging Coffeyville by a 2-1 score. The Cougars win was the 6th in row and kept them unbeaten in the Jayhawk Conference with a perfect 4-0 mark. Barton will look to keep that perfect mark in tact when its hosts Neosho Friday night at Great Bend High School’s Memorial Stadium in an 8 pm kickoff.
Highlights
The Cougars made things look easy in the early stages of the contest, scoring a pair of goals just 8 minutes into the contest. Ricardo Yeverino scored the 1st on an assist from Lynton Piertise 2 1/2 minutes into. Piertise then made it 2-0 on an assist from Tom Shaw on a kick over his left shoulder which sailed over the keeper. That, however, would be the final goal of the game for Barton as the Cougars played the final 82 minutes without a score.
Coffeyville cut the margin to a single goal when the Red Ravens scored on a penalty kick midway through the opening half. Barton had several chances in the 2nd half as 12 of the 16 shots on goal by the Cougars were struck in the final 45 minutes of play but Coffeyville’s James Kaiser – a former Cougar back up keeper – stopped all 12.
Coffeyville had a couple opportunities to tie the game but were only able to put 2 shots on goal – and just 4 overall – during the 2nd half. In all, Barton got off 21 2nd half shots without a score.
