Cougars end regular season with 7-3 win; host Cowley to open Region
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team closed down the 2009 regular season with a 7-3 win over Allen County Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. Barton finished the regular season with a 15-3 mark and has moved up to No. 9 in the latest NJCAA rankings. Barton finished 2nd in the Jayhawk Conference and will take the No. 2 seed into the Region VI playoffs next week. Barton will open 1st round action at home when Cowley visits the Cougars Tuesday. The contest will be played at Memorial Stadium at Great Bend High School with kickoff set for 7 pm.
Highlights
Barton found itself in a position it is has not been in very often this season when Allen scored the game’s opening goal and the Cougars trailed 1-0 just more than 5 minutes into the contest. Barton responded when Larry Mason scored for the Cougars 8 minutes later and Ricardo Yeverino scored just 6 minutes after that to give Barton a lead it would not relinquish.
The Cougars pushed that lead to 4-1 by intermission and eventually to 5-1 before Allen scored a 2nd goal. It was only the 4th time all season Barton had given up more than 1 goal – the other 3 occasions were the Cougars only 3 losses. Barton ran the margin to 7-2 before giving up a 3rd goal in the final 10 minutes of the game. The 3 goals are the most Barton has given up in a game this year.
Sophomore Leandro Reis had a pair of goals and pair of assists in the win while sophomore Harry Newman had a goal and 2 assists. Tarek Khalidi and Callum O’Connor both had goals as well in the win while Austin Steadmon and Yeverino added assists.
The Cougars will have a week off before tangling with the Tigers in Region VI play. Barton defeated Cowley earlier this season, winning 2-1 in Arkansas City back on September 19. A Barton win would move the Cougars into semifinal action against the winner of KCK at Garden City. That contest would be played October 31 at 6:30 pm in Topeka’s Hummer Park. The Region VI Championship game is set for November 1 at 2:30 pm
