Barton’s 42-game Jayhawk unbeaten streak ends with loss at Johnson
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team saw a long unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday in Overland Park. It was the 1st time in 43 Jayhawk conference games that Barton lost when Johnson County scored a 2-1 win over the Cougars. Barton was 40-0-2 since a 2-0 loss to Dodge City to end the regular season back in 2004. The win put Johnson in the driver’s seat for the Jayhawk Conference title at 8-0-1 mark in the conference and just one conference tilt remaining. Barton fell to 6-1 and has a big battle with 6-1 Garden City Wednesday night in Garden.
Highlights
The lone goal of the opening half went to the Cavaliers as Alex Lawrence scored 15 minutes into the contest for 1-0 lead. That is where the game stayed until the early stages of the 2nd half when Johnson scored for the 2nd time and a 2-0 lead on the Cougars. Barton added a goal later in the half to make it 2-1 when Harry Newman scored from Andrew Lockett, but the Cougars couldn’t even the game up in the final minutes.
Barton outshot Johnson 17-10 and put slightly more shots on goal (8-6) but couldn’t win the battle on the scoreboard, giving Barton Coach Oliver Twelvetrees his 1st taste of losing in the Jayhawk in his 4 years at the helm of Barton.
Barton will try and start a new streak Wednesday, but it won’t be easy. Garden City will host the Cougars in what looked to be a battle for the Jayhawk title at season’s start with Garden picked 1st in the coaches poll and Barton 2nd. But that will now be a battle for 2nd. Garden City has both of those ties with the Cougars during the 42-game streak, including a 0-0 tie last season in Great Bend during Jayhawk play.
