Cougars score big Jayhawk win in Garden, 1-0
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team bounced back from its 1st loss in Jayhawk Conference play in nearly 5 years with a big win at Garden City Wednesday night in a battle of ranked teams. The No.14 Cougars moved to within a game of locking down the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Region VI playoffs with a 1-0 win over defending Region VI Champion No. 13 Broncbusters. The win moved Barton to 13-3 overall and 8-1 in Region VI. Garden City falls to 11-3 and 7-2. Barton can secure that 2nd spot win a win over KCK Friday in Kansas City. Barton is now 41-1-2 in its last 44 Jayhawk games.

Highlights
The two teams put forth a defensive battle for the entire 1st half as every shot put on goal was saved. The two teams went to intermission deadlocked at 0-0. The Cougars finally got on the scoreboard when Ricardo Yeverino scored midway through the 2nd half.

Yeverino, a graduate of Garden City High School this past spring, scored the only goal against his hometown team with 25 minutes to play in the contest on an assist from sophomore Leandro Reis. Reis found Yeverino on a cross just 6 yards out in the box and the freshman flicked it into the net.

From there, the Cougar defense pitched the shutout behind Josh Euell in goal and a strong backline. It was the 1st time this season the Broncbusters had been shutout. In fact, it was the 1st time since the opening round of the NJCAA Tournament last year Garden had been shut out and the Busters won that game in a shoot-out. It was the 1st regular season shutout for Garden since Barton beat them 3-0 in 2007.

Barton sits alone in 2nd in the conference and the region and can secure those spots with a win over KCK Friday. The Blue Devils will not be an easy foe to beat as they bring a 5-3-1 region mark to the contest and an 11-6-1 overall record.
