Cougars secure at least share of Jayhawk Conference men’s soccer title
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team locked up at least a share of back-to-back Jayhawk Conference titles after winning a 4-0 contest over Kansas City Kansas Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Great Bend. Barton can win the title outright for the 2nd straight season with a win at Independence Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars are now 8-0-1 in the Jayhawk this season and 17-0-1 overall. KCK fell to 5-4 and 10-9. Earlier in the week, Barton posted a 5-0 blanking of Neosho County in Chanute. The Cougars are currently ranked 4th in the NJCAA poll but have a chance to move up this week after No. 3 Tyler (Texas) lost.
Highlights
Barton dominated the opening half of play against KCK Sunday, bolting to a 4-0 halftime lead. Leandro Reis put the Cougars on the board 1st taking a corner kick from Oscar Narvaez and drilling it home from 20 yards out from the left side in the opening 15 minutes. Reis then assisted Marcello Carminatti as Barton took a 2-0 in the 32nd minute when Carminatti scored off a KCK defender.
Barton pushed it to 3-0 when Carminatti assisted Luciano Brilho with a pass in the box and finish just 3 minutes later. Reis recorded his 2nd goal when he took a pass from Brilho, dribbled into the box and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net for a 4-0 lead with 3 minutes left in the opening half.
Earlier in the week, Barton had a similar performance at Neosho, jumping to a 4-0 halftime lead on the way to a 5-0 win over the Panthers. Five different Cougars scored in the win with Carminatti, Harry Newman and Brilho each getting a goal and an assist. Tom Hurdle and Skyler Schwartz each scored a goal from their defender spots while Narvaez and Joey Rothermel each had assists.
The two shutouts on the week pushed Barton keeper Donovan Dowling and the Barton defense shutout mark to 13 – a single season record set back at the 11th shutout. Barton has not allowed more than 1 goal in any game this season with only 5 goals allowed on the year.
In addition to the goalkeeping and defensive records falling this year, Narvaez moved into a tie for the most assists recorded in a single season with his 11th of the year on the 1st goal against KCK Sunday. Carminatti moved into a tie for 4th in single season goals with his 17th of the year against KCK. He is also 4th with 42 points in a season. For his career, Carminatti is 2nd all-time in points (71) and goals (27). Michael Brewer (83, 28) leads the two categories which are within reach for the sophomore from Brazil. Carminatti and Narvaez are tied for the all-time assist mark with 17.
Barton will look for its 2nd straight outright title and the 5th in the past 6 seasons with a win Tuesday at Indy. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday but has been moved up to help Independence make up a game before the end of the week and seeding for the Region VI Tournament next week. Barton will be at home for that Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 3 pm. The opponent has yet to be determined.
