Barton comes up short in quest for Region VI soccer title
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team saw its season end in a heartbreaking fashion one win short of a Region VI championship. The Cougars’ season ended in one of the toughest ways possible – a penalty kick shoot-out to decide the region title. After Barton and Garden City played to a 1-all tie following a pair of scoreless overtimes, Garden won the PK shoot-out 4-3 to win the region title and advance to the District tournament to compete for a shot at the NJCAA National Championships. Barton won a 2-1 contest in the semifinals, rallying in the 2nd half to defeat Kansas City Kansas. The Cougars season ends with a 20-0-2 mark after the tie in the Region VI title game.
Highlights
The two clubs weren’t able to find the net much during the contest with the game going to intermission in a scoreless tie. Barton took a 1-0 lead early in the 2nd half when Marcello Carminatti scored just 4 minutes into the half. Barton kept the score at 1-0 until 15 minutes remained in the game when Garden evened the contest at 1-1 on a Steve Shaw goal off a rebound. The game stayed tied through the final 15 minutes of regulation and through 2 overtimes that totaled 20 more minutes.
The contest then went to a Penalty Kick sudden death with the team scoring the most time in 5 attempts earning the Region VI title and moving to the District Playoffs and a shot at the NJCAA National Tournament. Garden City won that 4-3 to end Barton’s season – a season without a loss.
In the semifinals, Barton had to rally in the 2nd half for the 2-1 win over KCK. Reon Thomas put KCK up 1-0 just 4 minutes into the contest and that is how the game stayed through halftime and well into the 2nd half. Barton finally evened the score at 1-1 all with just 6 minutes to play in the contest on an Oscar Narvaez goal on a penalty kick. Carminatti put the Cougars up 2-1 just 2 minutes later on a through ball from James Neighbour to advance Barton to the Region VI finals.
Barton season ends with several new school marks including the highest ranking in school history at No. 2 heading into the Region VI title game. The Cougars have reaped several individual accolades as well, including Oliver Twelvetrees earning Coach of the Year in the Jayhawk Conference and Carminatti earning Player of the Year.
