Barton breezes through opening round play in Region VI tournament
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team had not trouble securing a spot in the Region VI semifinals, posting an easy 6-0 win over Cowley in opening round play Tuesday at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. Barton jumped to a 5-0 lead in the game’s opening 17 minutes and was never challenged. The Cougars – the top seed in the region and ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA – are now 19-0-1 and will take on Kansas City Kansas in semifinal action at Hummer Park in Topeka Saturday at noon. Barton is the reigning Region VI champion and has won 2 region titles in the 8 year history of the program.

Highlights
Barton scored 3 times in the 1st 10 minutes of the contest as Tom Hurdle, AJ Jackson, and Marcello Carminatti all scored goals. Harry Newman added a pair of goals within a couple of minutes of each other with the final one coming less than 17 minutes into the contest giving Barton a 5-0 lead. Leandro Reis added a goal with 10 minutes left in the half for a 6-0 lead that would eventually be the final margin.

Oscar Narvaez had 2 assists in the win while Carminatti, Reis, and Kyle Smith all adding assists as well. Barton got off 33 shots in the game of which 16 were on goal. Donovan Dowling and James Kaiser split the shutout with Dowling earning 1 save in the opening half and Kaiser 3 in the 2nd half.

Barton moves into the semifinals to take on KCK for the right to play for the Region VI title Sunday afternoon. In a late-season contest played at Memorial Stadium in Great Bend, Barton beat KCK 4-0 in a game that saw Barton take a 4-0 halftime before a scoreless 2nd half. The Cougars will be seeking a spot in the finals for the 4th time.

The Cougars won the region in 2002 and 2007. KCK won the title 2003 after beating then No. 1 seed Barton in the semifinals and also made the finals in 2004. The other half of the draw will pit 2nd seed Garden City (15-1-1) against 5th seed Allen County (7-9-2). Allen upset Johnson in the opening round. Garden’s only loss this year was to Johnson. The Broncbusters and Cougars tied earlier this year in Great Bend. Allen and Johnson will play at 2 pm with the finals slated for 1 pm Sunday.
