Barton wraps up back-to-back Jayhawk titles; ranked No. 2 in NJCAA
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team secured its 2nd straight outright Jayhawk Conference title with a 6-1 win at Independence Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars stayed unbeaten in the conference, finishing with a 9-0-1 Jayhawk mark and an 18-0-1 overall record. Barton is now ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA – the highest the Cougars have ever been ranked in the poll. Barton has won 6 of the past 7 Jayhawk titles with the only gap coming in 2006 when Barton went unbeaten in the conference but was ineligible due to NJCAA probation. Barton is now unbeaten in its last 35 Jayhawk Conference matches with a record of 33-0-2. Independence falls to 0-9 in the Jayhawk and 2-14 overall. Barton will be at home Tuesday when the Cougars host Cowley in the opening round of the Region VI tournament. Barton is the top seed in the tournament while Cowley is No. 8.
Highlights
Barton got off to a sluggish start as the Cougars allowed just their 6th goal of the season 15 minutes into the contest as Indy tied it up at 1-all. After that it was all Barton as the Cougars took a 3-1 lead to halftime and won the contest 6-1.
Tarek Khalidi scored twice in the win for the Cougars while Harry Newman had a goal and an assist. Martin Narvaez, Leandro Reis and Tom Shaw each scored goals in the win while Marcello Carminatti, Skyler Schwartz, and Luciano Brilho all added assists.
Barton will now set out to defend its Region VI title in an effort to advance to the school’s 2nd NJCAA National Tournament. Barton must 1st win the Region VI title then win a district championship before moving to the NJCAA tournament. The only time Barton made it that far was in 2002 when the Cougars won the 1st of its 6 Jayhawk titles and entered the NJCAA rankings for the 1st time in school history late that year.
Barton will host Cowley to start region play Tuesday and if the Cougars win that they will travel to Topeka this weekend for the semifinals and finals. If Barton beats Cowley, the Cougars will play the winner of the KCK/Cloud game at Noon Saturday in Hummer Park. The Region VI title game will be Sunday at 1 pm.
