Barton moves into tie for top spot in Jayhawk; can claim top spot Saturday
The Barton County Community College men’s soccer team moved to within one game of clinching the best record in the Jayhawk Conference for the 4th straight year. The Cougars defeated Allen County Wednesday, 3-2, in Iola, to move to 6-0 in the Jayhawk this season and up its school record winning streak to 13 games. Barton, at 6-0, has 18 points in the conference with 2 games to play. Neosho also has 18 points, but with a 6-1 record, has just one game left – a visit to Barton Saturday at 4 pm. Due to an unprecedented depart-wide probation placed on Barton this year by the NJCAA, the Cougars are not eligible to win the Jayhawk Conference Championship so Neosho has already clinched the conference crown. But the Cougars still have the best record in the conference and still have a shot at an unbeaten conference season. Barton currently has a 14-game conference unbeaten streak going.
Highlights
Alex Liebeno again put the Cougars on top in the later stages of the opening half, scoring a goal with just 7:29 to play in the half on an assist from Matt Farag. The Cougars pushed that lead to 2-0 with less than 1 minute to play in the opening when Omar Ayache scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season. The Cougars scored for the 3rd time in a 20-minute span when Pedro Petris scored on a penalty kick 13 minutes into the 2nd half for the 3-0 lead and the eventual final margin.
Barton recorded its 2nd straight shutout and 3rd in the past 4 games with the blanking of the Red Devils. The Cougars, behind a stout defense and sophomore goal keeper Craig Ratanamorn have not allowed more than 1 goal since a season-opening loss to No. 5 San Jacinto (Texas). That is still Barton’s only loss. The Cougars have recorded 7 shutouts this year.
