Barton
falls on road as Seward men turn in big 2nd half
The
Barton County Community College men’s basketball team led
at the halfway mark of its road trip to Liberal Wednesday night
for Jayhawk West action but the 2nd half belonged to the host Seward
County Saints, who rode the big 2nd half to a 72-57 win over the
Cougars at the Green House. Seward County outscored the Cougars
by 19 points in the half to give them the home win. Barton’s
Thiago Cordeiro turned in a triple-double for the Cougars in a losing
effort. The loss drops the Cougars to 15-7 overall this season and
3-5 in West play. Seward improves 17-5 and 3-5. Barton will back
home Saturday as the Cougars begin their 2nd trip through the West
when Pratt visits on Homecoming night at the Barton County Gym.
Highlights
A strong 1st half effort by Cordeiro led the Cougars to a 32-28
halftime advantage. Cordeiro hit 4-of-8 shots for 9 points and grabbed
10 rebounds as well in the opening 20 minutes to put him well on
his way to a double-double. In the half, Barton limited the Saints
to just 10-for-37 shooting.
The
2nd half saw Cordeiro block two early shots to give him 5 blocks
as Barton held the lead the first 5 minutes of the half. But despite
Cordeiro continuing to swat away shots on his way to a career-high
10, the Saints began to pull away. Seward turned the ball over just
3 times in the 2nd half, resulting in 11 more shots than Barton.
Another big key was Barton getting no offensive rebounds at all
in the 2nd half while Seward County grabbed 8 offensive boards and
turned them into 11 points.
When
Cordeiro recorded his 10th and final block at the 2:47 mark, Cordeiro
had his triple double. The 10 blocked shots is No. 3 all-time in
school history behind Alek Radojevic. Radojevic blocked 12 shots
against Seward in early February of 1999 then followed the next
game with 11 more blocks at Dodge City. Cordeiro now has
Cordeiro
finished with 11 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocks. Reggie Love
added 11 points as well while Dominique White led Barton with 5
assists. Michael Tyree and Adam Tanner led Seward with 16 and 15
points while Keith Spencer grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds. Theron
Wilson turned in a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
