Short-handed Cougars lose at Garden City
The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team played without two starters Wednesday night in Garden City, coming up short in the Jayhawk West contest at the Perryman Activities Complex by an 87-73 score. Barton played the contest without Chris Berry and AJ Martin. Berry had left the team and will not play the rest of the season while Martin was serving a 1-game suspension. The Cougars fell to 3-7 in the West and 15-9 overall on the season while Garden City improved to 5-5 in conference play and 16-7 overall. Barton’s bye date in the conference will be Saturday so the Cougars will not return to action until Wednesday when Colby visits the Barton County Gym.

Highlights
A tough 1st half doomed the Cougars put them in a hole that was too big to climb out as Barton trailed 46-27 at the half. The Cougars were still very much in the contest with 7:30 to play in the half when a Thiago Cordeiro basket made it 23-19 in favor of Garden. But during the next 6 minutes of play Garden went on a 19-4 run to take a 44-23 lead late in the half. The Broncbusters extended it to 22 before Barton cut it to 19 at the half.

The Cougars made some noise to start the 2nd half, going on a 9-3 run highlighted by 5 quick points from Joel Stuckey. That cut the lead to 13 but Garden worked it back up to 19 a few minutes later. That is how much of the 2nd half would play out with the closest the Cougar would get would be at 12 point with just less than 3 minutes to play.

Ivan Evans had a big game for Barton, leading the Cougars with 25 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor. The 25 points topped his previous career-high by a single point. He also grabbed 14 rebounds for his 3rd double-double in 10 games this season. Dominique White had 18 points in the loss to go with 8 assists. Cordeiro and Stuckey each had 10. Depree Fletcher scored 22 to pace Garden. Roy Bright added 16 – all in the 1st half before fouling out with limited playing time in the 2nd half.
