Barton men 6th at Region VI; District III action next for Cougars
The Barton Community College men’s golf team finished in a familiar spot at the final Jayhawk Conference meet of the season taking 6th in the event that doubled as the Region VI Championships as well. Barton shot a 978 over the 54-hole event. It was the 4th time in 6 events the Cougars finished 6th. Barton also had 5th and 9th place finish during the conference season. Hutchinson won the event with an 887, 20 strokes better than Dodge City’s runner up total of 907. The Cougars lone event left on the schedule is the District III Championship Monday and Tuesday at Wild Horse Golf Club in Gothenburg, Neb. That event will qualify individuals and teams for the NJCAA National Championships in Alabama next Month.

Highlights
The Cougars shot a consistent score each day with team totals of 328, 324, and 326. Timothy Spare led Barton with an 80-78-80 – 238 over the Par 72 layout. Cale Demel was close behind with an 83-79-77 – 239. Travis Neidig was also able to break 80 during the event, shooting a 79-82-84 – for a 245 total. Lane Schartz 86-85-85 – 256 and Landon Stephens 92-85-90 – 267 rounded out the Cougars scoring at the 2-day event.

The Cougars were battling Colby for that 5th spot but on the final day Colby passed Barton, shooting a 321 to the Cougars 326. That gave Colby a 976 – two strokes better than Barton. Johnson County was 3rd with a 927 just 3 strokes better than Kansas City Kansas which shot a 930 for 4th.

Spare and Demel finished 15th and 16th overall in the tournament, which was won by Chien Hau Tan of Dodge City with a 218, 2-over par total. Hau Tan opened with an even par 72 then shot a pair of 73’s to close out, winning by 4 strokes. Dodge City’s Ross Milne and Hutchinson’s Ben Lowman each shot a 222 for tie for 2nd.
