Cougars snap skid; Burton goes for 29, Beatty for 22
The Barton Community College men’s basketball team put the brakes on a 3-game losing streak Saturday night with an 83-71 win over Dodge City at the Barton Gym. The Cougars took the lead early in the contest and never trailed on the way to the win. Karon Burton scored 29 and Colin Beatty 22 to pace the Cougars in the highest scoring output in Jayhawk West play. Barton improved to 4-7 in the West and 14-11 overall. Dodge is now 4-7 also with an overall mark of 16-9. The Cougars will take to the road in a big game for seeding purposes in the upcoming Region VI tournament with a trip to Garden City. Garden is 3-7 in the West and 12-12 overall.
Barton comes up short in upset bid at Cloud; lose at Seward
The Barton Community College women’s basketball team put together its best offensive game since the very early stages of the season with an 82-47 win over Dodge City Saturday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars scored their 3rd highest point total of the year and shot their best percentage from the field of the season in the Jayhawk West win. The Cougars are now 5-6 in the West and 12-12 overall while Dodge City falls to 1-10 in West play and 3-22 overall. Barton will travel to Garden City Wednesday night for a 5:30 pm tip at the Perryman Center.
Barton men's basketball drops long road trips to start week
The Barton Community College men’s basketball team finished up a long start the week with a pair of losses on the road. The Cougars lost in Concordia on Monday and Seward on Wednesday in back-to-back long road trips with a very short turn around. Barton lost at battle at Seward Wednesday night 89-82 in the Green House and fell in a big way at Cloud Monday, 92-68 in Bryant Gym. Barton is now 3-7 in the West and 13-11 overall on the season. The Cougars will be back on their home floor Saturday to wrap up the busy week with a home date against Dodge City.
Barton women come up short in upset bid at Cloud; lose at Seward
The Barton Community College women’s basketball team nearly pulled off the upset Monday night in Concordia before losing to Cloud County in close contest. The Cougars lost 55-48 to the 21-2 Thunderbirds in Bryant Gymnasium. Things weren’t quite as close for Barton two days later with another long road to trip to a 22-2 team, falling to Seward 87-63. Barton is now 11-12 overall this year and 4-6 in the Jayhawk West. The Cougars will look to get back to the winning track Saturday when Dodge City visits the Barton Gym for a 6 pm tip.
Barton loses heart-breaker to Pratt
The Barton Community College men’s basketball team suffered a tough loss Saturday night at the hands of the Pratt Beavers, falling 74-71 at the Barton Gym. Barton led nearly the entire contest before Pratt finally overtook the Cougars late in the game for the win. Barton drops to 13-9 overall with the loss and 3-5 in the Jayhawk West. Pratt improves to 16-6 and 5-3. Barton rolls into a busy start to February with back-to-back road trips during the week. Barton will be at Concordia to take on Cloud County Monday then in Liberal to do battle with Seward County Wednesday. Both games tip at 8 pm.
Cougars finally capture West home win with 71-64 win over Pratt
The Barton Community College women’s basketball team earned a 71-64 win Pratt Saturday night at the Barton Gym to capture the Cougars 1st home West win of the year. The win for the suddenly hot Cougars was the team’s 7th in its last 9 games. Barton even its record at 4-4 in the West and climbed over the .500 mark for the 1st time since mid November with an 11-10 overall mark. Pratt fell to 3-19 overall and 2-6 in the West. Barton now plays back-to-back games at two of the league leaders over 3 days. Those two have a combined mark of 40-3. It starts Monday at Concordia against Cloud County (20-2). Barton will then travel Wednesday to Seward County (21-1). Both games will tip at 6 pm.
Cougar men finally pick up 1st road win with victory at Colby
The Barton Community College men’s basketball team earned its 1st road win of the season Wednesday night with a victory at Colby. The Cougars earned the Jayhawk West road win with a 64-51 win at the Community Building, stopping a 3-game losing skid. Barton is now 13-8 overall on the season and 3-4 in the West. The Trojans fell to 6-16 overall and 0-8 in the West. Barton will wrap up its 1st trip through the conference with a home date Saturday against Pratt. The Beavers will bring a 15-6 overall record to the contest including a 4-3 mark in the West.
Barton wins 3rd straight West road tilt
The Barton Community College women’s basketball team made it 3 in row on the road to start the Jayhawk West season, giving the Cougars 9 straight West road wins. Barton’s latest victory away from home came at Colby Wednesday night as the Cougars rolled to a 71-51 win over the Trojans at the Community Building. The win improved Barton to 3-4 in the West and 10-10 overall. Colby fell to 2-20 and 0-8 with the loss. Barton will look for its 1st home win in the West this year when Pratt comes to the Barton Gym for a 6 pm tip.
Barton men lose another close Jayhawk West contest
The Barton Community College men’s basketball team dropped its 2nd straight close contest in the Jayhawk West with a tough 87-83 loss to Hutchinson Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. That comes on the heels of a 65-64 setback at Dodge City Monday. The loss drops Barton to 2-4 in the West and 12-8 overall. Hutch, ranked No. 12 in the latest NJCAA poll, improve to 4-1 in the West and 17-2 overall. Barton will now get a week off before the Cougars travel to Colby to take on the Trojans. That contest is slated to tip at 8 pm at the Community Building.
Barton struggles at home continue in 63-50 West loss
The Barton Community College women’s basketball team has still not managed to win a home game in Jayhawk West play this season after a 63-50 loss to Hutchinson Wednesday night. Ironically, the Cougars are a perfect 2-0 on the road in the West. The competition weighs heavily into the 0-4 home mark as the 4 teams have combined to go 17-3 in the West with all 3 losses coming to each other. And 3 of the 4 teams – Seward, Cloud, and Hutch – are a combined 52-5 this season overall. Barton will now get a week off before returning to the road where the Cougars will face Colby at the Community Building with a scheduled 6 pm tip.
Cougars drop road games at Dodge and Butler
The Barton Community College men’s basketball team is still searching for its 1st road win of the season after dropping a pair of Jayhawk West road contests over the extended weekend. Barton lost Monday night at Dodge City in a game that went to the final seconds, 65-64. The loss at Butler Saturday night didn’t go to the final seconds as Barton was blown out at in El Dorado, 86-66. The Cougars will return home Wednesday for another West tilt against Hutchinson. Barton is now 2-3 in the West and 12-7 overall. Hutchinson will bring a 16-2 record to town and a 3-1 mark in the West.
Cougars get in West win column with a pair of road wins
The Barton Community College women’s basketball team found itself 0-3 in the West with 3 home losses heading into the extended weekend but righted the ship with a pair of crucial road wins to bring its mark to 2-3 in the West. Barton won at Dodge 67-60 Monday night following a 72-65 win at Butler on Saturday. Barton is now 9-9 overall this season. The Cougars will look to reach the .500 mark in conference play as well when Hutchinson visits the Barton Gym Wednesday for a 6 pm tip. Hutch is 2-2 in the West and 15-3 overall, ranked No. 23 in last week’s NJCAA poll.
Barton men's basketball beats Garden in return to West action
The Barton Community College men’s basketball team returned to Jayhawk West action with a 73-66 win over Garden City Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. Barton used a big 2nd half – outscoring Garden by a 52-38 margin to secure the win. The Cougars improved to 2-1 in the West and 12-5 overall on the season. Garden fell to 0-2 in the West and 9-7 overall. The Cougars will be on the road for the next two contests after starting the West season out with 3 homes dates. Barton will travel to El Dorado Saturday for a 7:30 pm tip against Butler. Monday the Cougars will drive to Dodge City to take on the Conquistadors in a game originally scheduled for Dec. 8.
Barton women lose tough contest to Garden in West hoops action
The Barton Community College women’s basketball team had its 3-game winning streak snapped with a tough 69-66 home loss to Garden City in Jayhawk West action Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars fell to 0-3 in the West with the loss while Garden stays unbeaten in West action with a 2-0 mark. Barton is now 7-9 overall and Garden is 6-10. The Cougars will go in search of West win number one this weekend at Butler with a 5:30 pm tip at the Power Plant in El Dorado. Barton will be at Dodge City Monday in a 5:30 tip as well.
Barton men’s soccer wins district title; headed to 2nd NJCAA Championship
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team finds itself exactly where it wanted to be back in August at the start of practice – the 2009 NJCAA National Tournament. Barton earned the school’s 2nd-ever trip there with a 4-2 win over host St. Louis-Meramec Saturday afternoon in the Plains District Championships. Barton had defeated Laramie County (Wyom) Friday, 2-1, to advance to play Meramec and the right to move on the NJCAA Championships in West Windsor, New Jersey in a little more than one week. The Cougars will take a 20-3 record to nationals, where they will take on 3rd ranked Schoolcraft College (Mich). Schoolcraft is 16-1-2. The game will be Thursday, November 19.
Barton men's soccer captures Region VI title for 2nd time in 3 years
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team took a huge step toward its goal of an NJCAA Tournament appearance with the school’s 2nd Region VI in the past 3 seasons. Barton won the championship game 2-1 over Cloud County Sunday at Hummer Park in Topeka. The Cougars moved into the semifinal contest when a pair of ranked teams did battle in the semifinals with the No. 9 Cougars shutting out No. 13 Garden City by a 3-0 score. The Region title is Barton’s 3rd in school history. The Cougars will need to win 2 more games this weekend in order to earn the school’s 2nd NJCAA Berth. Barton will take on Laramie County (Wyom) Friday at 1 pm in St. Louis in Plains District action. The winner of that contest gets host St. Louis-Meramec Saturday in a 2 pm start with the winner of game advancing to the NJCAA Tournament in New Jersey later this month.
