Cougar women 2nd at Cavalier Cup; men place 2 in top 7
The Barton Community College cross country team started its season in impressive fashion at the Cavalier Cup at Johnson County recently. Both the men and women displayed some positive things with 2 of the men’s 3 runners at the event placing in the top 7. Barton women finished 2nd to No. 4 ranked and host school Johnson County.
Men
Barton ran just 3 men in the meet with of the runners turning in top 7 efforts in Dean Gonsalves and Jabar Rolle. Gonsalves finished 5th in the 5K run with a time of 17:44.0. Rolle was close behind in 7th with a time of 17:58.2. The only other runner for the Cougars on the day was Eric O’Connor, who took 19th in a time of 21:18.1.
Brandon Tsethlikai of Haskell won the meet in a time of 17:06 followed by 3 Johnson County runners ranging from 17:22 to 17:39 – just ahead of Gonsalves. Johnson, ranked No. 8 nationally, easily won the team event with Haskell 2nd and Highland 3rd.
Women
Johnson County dominated the women’s meet with the top 6 finishers in the 4K race. Barton captured 2 of the next 5 spots and placed 5 runners in the top 25. Simone Buford led the way with a 7th place effort in 17:53.2. Trishawn Battiste was the 2nd Cougar to cross the finish line in 11th place with a time of 18:16.8. Andrea Sutherland was 15th, also breaking the 19-minute mark in 18:41.9.
The Cougars had 3 more runners in the top 30 with Shelleyeka Rolle in 21st (19:09.9), Faith Stowers 24th (19:20.8), and Valerie Stone 27th (19:30.7). Alexandra Webster just missed the top 30 as well as the 20-minute mark with a 31st place effort in 20:02.3.
Sarah Stark won the Cavalier Cup in a time of 15:58.5 to help the Johnson team to a total of 15 points for the win – the lowest total possible when scoring 5 runners. Barton was 2nd with 75 followed by Highland 3rd in 86. Sterling and Longview rounded out the field.
