Giambrone
tabbed 1st team All-Jayhawk West; Small, Morales, Biggs earn honors
Andre Giambrone capped off a great season for the Barton County
Community College baseball team by being selected as a 1st team
All-Jayhawk West pick by the conference coaches. Giambrone was the
only Cougar to earn 1st team honors but two more Barton players
were named 2nd team and another as an honorable mention pick. In
addition to Giambrone, a sophomore outfielder from Manhattan, Andrew
Small, a sophomore outfielder from Nebraska, and Ronnie Morales,
a sophomore pitcher from Oklahoma, were 2nd team picks. Great Bend
High graduate Brent Biggs, a freshman 2nd baseman, earned honorable
mention status.
Andrew
Giambrone
Giambrone led the Cougars with a .365 batting average and a .477
on base percentage from his leadoff spot in the lineup. The center
fielder started all 53 games – the only Cougar to do that.
In addition, Giambrone led the Cougars in RBI (44), hits (69), and
runs scored (50). He was 2nd in triples (4), 3rd in doubles (12),
and 3rd in slugging percentage (.503). He also led the Cougars in
stolen bases, successfully swiping 17-of-21 bases during the season.
His .989 fielding percentage was tops among every day players, committing
just 1 error during the season in 91 chances. He had more assists
(2) throwing runners out than errors.
Andrew
Small
Small was just behind Giambrone in several categories this season
for Barton. Small hit .341 with 42 RBI, 60 hits and 49 runs scored
– all 2nd to Giambrone. Small led the Cougars with 15 doubles,
5 triples, and a .534 slugging percentage. The left fielder who
played in all but 2 games this past season, was also 2nd in stolen
bases at 8-of-9 and 3rd in on base percentage at .417.
Ronnie
Morales
Morales ended with a 5-2 mark on the mound and a 4.05 ERA. The 5
wins tied for the lead, along with relief pitcher Nate Smith. Morales
struck out 42 batters and walked just 19 in 72 innings of work this
year. Morales started in 9 of the 11 games he appeared in and completed
2 contest.
Brent
Biggs
Biggs’ name is near Giambrone and Small at the top of several
hitting categories for the Cougars. Biggs hit .335 with 54 hits
and scored 46 runs – 3rd to Giambrone and Small. His .432
on base percentage was 2nd on the team as was his 52 starts. He
played in all 53 games and committed just 8 errors in 212 chances
at 2nd base for a .962 fielding percentage. Biggs banged out 10
