Schlick selected in 39th round by White Sox
Levi Schlick became the latest in a line of Barton Community College baseball players selected in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft. Schlick, a freshman for the Cougars last season, was picked on day three of the 3-day draft, going in the 39th round to the Chicago White Sox. Schlick will continue pitching for the Hays Lark this summer before a decision will be made on his future.
Schlick was outstanding this past year for the Cougars as the freshman from Colby posted a 2.11 ERA on his way to a 5-4 record in 11 starts. Schlick completed three games and struck out 77 batters in 64 innings of work. The 6-7 lefty walked 32 and limited opponents to a microscopic .194 batting average. He allowed just 10 extra base hits – 9 doubles and a homer.

Barton finishes season with 1-2 mark at Sub Regional; 32-24 on season
The Barton Community College baseball team saw its 2010 campaign end late Sunday afternoon El Dorado as the Cougars lost to Coffeyville for the 2nd time at the Sub Regional hosted by Butler. Barton lost Saturday to Coffeyville as well then beat Independence in the 4-team double elimination Sub Regional before falling to Coffeyville Sunday to ends its season. Barton finished its season with a 32-24 record. The Cougars lost a close contest to start the regional, falling to Coffeyville 4-3 to send Barton to the loser’s bracket. There Barton beat Independence 6-3 to earn a contest Sunday where Barton didn’t fare too well, losing 14-3 to Coffeyville. Butler won the event, beating Coffeyville in a 2nd championships game Tuesday. The Grizzlies with join the other 3 Sub Regional chamions in Wichita this weekend.

Softball goes 1-2 at Region VI tournament; finishes season 11-31
The Barton Community College softball team finished up its 2010 season with a 1-2 mark at the Region VI Tournament held at Wilkins Stadium in Wichita this past weekend. Barton won its opener against Colby by a 4-1 score then lost to Seward and Butler – the top two seeds – in the next two contests to finish the season with an 11-31 record. The Cougars played the 1st two games Friday then finished up Saturday on the campus of Wichita State University. Seward eventually won the tournament and move to the NJCAA National Tournament later this month in St. George, Utah. Seward is now 47-12 for the year.

Barton finishes tied for 5th in West; plays Coffeyville in El Dorado in Sub Regional
The Barton Community College baseball team lost 3 of 4 games over the weekend in its Jayhawk West finale at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend. The Cougars won the opener Saturday with Garden City then lost the next three to finish tied for 5th in the Jayhawk West but taking the 6th seed from the West to the post season. After a 5-4 win in 12 innings to start Saturday the Cougars lost 3-2 in 8 innings in the nightcap as the opening day produced a pair of extra inning contests. Sunday also had two close games as Barton lost 4-2 in the opener and 9-8 in the series finale. Barton finishes West play at 16-16 and is 31-22 overall. Garden City finished 3rd in the conference with a 21-11 West record and is 37-15 overall. The Broncbusters are ranked No. 19 in the NJCAA. Barton will head to El Dorado for a 4-team double elimination tournament in Region VI play with the winner of that going on to Wichita for the Region VI Championships the following weekend. Barton will take on Coffeyville Saturday at McDonald Park in El Dorado at 3 pm
.

Cougars lose pair to No. 11 Saints; face Colby to open Region VI play
The Barton Community College softball team lost its final two regular season games to Seward County Friday afternoon, falling to the No. 11 ranked Saints 6-3 and 12-2 at Cougar Fields. Barton, which earlier in the week picked up a forfeit win from Luna College (NM), is now 10-29 on the season and finished Jayhawk West play 2-14. Seward won the West and will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Region VI tournament. The Saints are 44-12 overall and were 13-3 in the West. Barton will be the No. 5, taking on No. 4 Colby to start the tournament at Wichita State University’s Wilkins Stadium Friday at 10 am.

Barton splits region contests with Butler; Seward here Friday
The Barton Community College softball team split a doubleheader with Butler Tuesday afternoon in Region VI play at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. The Cougars won the opener in a tightly fought 1-0 affair then fell 8-0 in the nightcap for the split. The win was the 2nd for Barton in region play as the Cougars improved to 2-12 in region play and 9-28 overall. The loss hurt Butler in its pursuit of a top seed in the region and the Jayhawk West title. Butler is now 8-4 in the region and 37-11 overall. That is two games behind Seward at 10-2 and 41-11. Barton can now help Butler out Friday as Seward visits Cougar Fields at 3 pm.  

Cougars take 3 of 4 in Dodge; host Garden this weekend
The Barton Community College baseball team took 3 of 4 in its Jayhawk West series at Dodge City this past weekend. The Cougars swept the Conquistadors Saturday 10-1 and 6-2. Dodge rolled to a 13-3 win to start Sunday then Barton closed out the series with a 12-9 win. Barton is now tied for 5th in the West at 15-13 and still could finish as high as 3rd. The Cougars are 29-19 overall. Dodge locked up the No. 7 in the West with its 14-18 record and West season complete for Dodge. The other 8 teams will wrap up West play this weekend with Barton hosting Garden City at 1 pm both Saturday and Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field.

Strecker wins medalist honors; Barton 2nd at Region VI golf meet
The Barton Community College women’s golf team took 2nd at the Region VI Championships Monday and Tuesday in Hutchinson. The Cougars – along with three other Jayhawk Conference schools – competed at Carey Park with Barton freshman Rachel Strecker winning the event on the opening playoff hole after tying with Colby’s Chelsie Gausman. Barton finished 2nd overall with Dodge City winning the event. Colby was 3rd. Strecker and teammate Shanda Thompson both earned a trip to the NJCAA National Meet in Daytona Beach, Fla in May.

Cougar softball loses at Butler; Brown Mackie games cancelled
The Barton Community College softball team dropped two games to Butler in Region VI play Wednesday afternoon in El Dorado. Butler won the opener by an 11-1 score then captured a 5-0 win in the nightcap. Barton is now 8-27 overall and 1-11 in the region. Butler is currently 2nd in the region to Seward. The Grizzlies are 7-3 and 36-10 overall. Barton was schedule to play Brown Mackie today in Salina but that contest has been cancelled. Barton will wind up its regular season over the next week-plus with three doubleheaders. Barton will host the top two teams in the West – Butler and Seward – next week to wrap up region play then host McCook (Neb) for a twinbill May 3.

Barton men 6th at Region VI championships; District III next
The Barton Community College men’s golf team finished in a familiar spot at the final Jayhawk Conference meet of the season taking 6th in the event that doubled as the Region VI Championships as well. Barton shot a 978 over the 54-hole event. It was the 4th time in 6 events the Cougars finished 6th. Barton also had 5th and 9th place finish during the conference season. Hutchinson won the event with an 887, 20 strokes better than Dodge City’s runner up total of 907. The Cougars lone event left on the schedule is the District III Championship Monday and Tuesday at Wild Horse Golf Club in Gothenburg, Neb. That event will qualify individuals and teams for the NJCAA National Championships in Alabama next Month.

Baseball wraps up non conference stretch with 4-2 mark
The Barton Community College baseball team filled up a stretch of 13 days between conference series with 6 non conference games scattered over 5 dates all at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend. The Cougars finished that stretch with a 4-2 mark, earning wins over Brown Mackie, the Bethany and Kansas Wesleyan JV’s as well as going 1-2 in a weekend series with Southeast Community College from Nebraska. The Cougars are now 26-18 on the season and will step back into West play this weekend at Dodge City for 4 games starting Saturday.

Barton softball splits games at Colby Tournament
The Barton Community College softball team split 4 games over the weekend in Colby at the Alan Wolf Tournament. Barton went 1-1 both days, losing its opener Saturday to Luna College (NM) then beating Lamar College (Colo). Barton again dropped its opener Sunday to Colby before defeated Luna to end the event. Barton lost doubleheaders at Seward County and Garden City earlier in the week in Region VI play. The Cougars are now 8-25 on the season. The Cougars wrap up their extended road tour with games at Butler and Brown Mackie this week.

Cougar men golfers 6th at Hesston; Region VI meet next week at Newton
The Barton Community College men’s golf team took 6th at the Hesston Country Club Monday in the 5th designate for the Jayhawk Conference this season. The Cougars are currently tied for 6th in the conference standings with Allen County. Barton’s Cale Demel just missed a Top 10 finish in the event with a 153 over 36 holes – tied for 11th place. The Jayhawk Conference Championships – the final meet of the conference season – will take place Monday and Tuesday of next week at Sand Creek Station in Newton.

Softball sweeps Brown Mackie split in Nebraska for 3-1 stretch
The Barton Community College softball team picked up some much needed wins over an extended weekend, splitting games at McCook (Nebraska) Friday then sweeping Brown Mackie Monday at Cougars Fields in Great Bend. It was the 1st series sweep for Barton this year. The Cougars are also on a 3-game winning streak, doubling their win total in the process. Barton is now 6-19 for the season. The Cougars will step back in Region VI play later this week when they play road games at Seward Wednesday and Garden City Thursday.

Barton rallies for series split with Butler; Schlick tosses 3-hitter
The Barton Community College baseball team bounced back from a forgetful Saturday to have a memorable Sunday in its Jayhawk West series this past weekend at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend. The Cougars dropped a pair of games Saturday to co-West leader Butler – one in very tough fashion – then swept the Grizzlies Sunday – both down the wire. Barton won Sunday 1-0 behind a 3-hit gem from freshman Levi Schlick. The Cougars won the 2nd game in dramatic come-from-behind fashion in extra innings, 10-9 in 10 innings.  Butler won Saturday games 7-3 in 9 innings and 17-5. The Cougars are now 12-12 in the West and 22-16 overall. Butler is 14-6 in the West and 22-13 overall. Barton is out of conference play for a while hosting the Bethany JV Monday and Southeast Nebraska this weekend.

Softball picks up win in nightcap to earn split with Colby
The Barton Community College softball team capped Thursday’s doubleheader with a win over Colby to earn a split for the day in Region IV regular season play at Cougar Fields. Barton got a stellar pitching performance from Michelle Balliett in the finale for the Cougars’ 3rd win of the season and the 1st in region action. Barton nearly pulled off a huge comeback in the opening game, rallying from 5 down the 7th, but lost the contest in extra innings, 10-6 in 9. Barton is now 3-18 for the season and 1-5 in region play. Colby is 20-12 and 6-4. The Cougars will step out of region for its next 2 twinbills, heading to Nebraska to play McCook Friday then hosting Brown Mackie Monday.

Barton men capture NJCAA Indoor Championships
National titles don’t get much more fun than the one won by the Barton Community College men’s track and field team Saturday. Barton and Iowa Central battled to the final event in Charleston, Illinois, where the Cougars won the event and with it an NJCAA National Indoor title. That gave Barton a razor-thin margin in total points – 114.5 to 113. Heading into that event – the 4x400m relay –  Iowa Central led by 2.5 points, meaning Barton not only had to win the event but if Iowa Western finished 2nd, the Tritons would win the meet 115-114.5. Fortunately for the Cougars, Rend Lake (Ill) finished between Barton and Iowa Central to give the Cougars the title. It was the Cougars 1st indoor title since 2006, which capped a string of 9 straight at the time.

Barton women take 4th at NJCAA Indoor Track Championships
The Barton Community College women’s track and field team fought its way to a 4th place finish at the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend at Charleston, Ill. The Cougars finished the event with 54 points – solidly in 4th. Barton was 7 points ahead of the 5th place team and 8 points behind 3rd place Cowley College. Iowa Central and New Mexico Junior College tied for the title with 115 points.

Barton men’s soccer wins district title; headed to 2nd NJCAA Championship
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team finds itself exactly where it wanted to be back in August at the start of practice – the 2009 NJCAA National Tournament. Barton earned the school’s 2nd-ever trip there with a 4-2 win over host St. Louis-Meramec Saturday afternoon in the Plains District Championships. Barton had defeated Laramie County (Wyom) Friday, 2-1, to advance to play Meramec and the right to move on the NJCAA Championships in West Windsor, New Jersey in a little more than one week. The Cougars will take a 20-3 record to nationals, where they will take on 3rd ranked Schoolcraft College (Mich). Schoolcraft is 16-1-2. The game will be Thursday, November 19.

Barton men's soccer captures Region VI title for 2nd time in 3 years
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team took a huge step toward its goal of an NJCAA Tournament appearance with the school’s 2nd Region VI in the past 3 seasons. Barton won the championship game 2-1 over Cloud County Sunday at Hummer Park in Topeka. The Cougars moved into the semifinal contest when a pair of ranked teams did battle in the semifinals with the No. 9 Cougars shutting out No. 13 Garden City by a 3-0 score. The Region title is Barton’s 3rd in school history. The Cougars will need to win 2 more games this weekend in order to earn the school’s 2nd NJCAA Berth. Barton will take on Laramie County (Wyom) Friday at 1 pm in St. Louis in Plains District action. The winner of that contest gets host St. Louis-Meramec Saturday in a 2 pm start with the winner of game advancing to the NJCAA Tournament in New Jersey later this month.
