Barton men’s soccer wins district title; headed to 2nd NJCAA Championship
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team finds itself exactly where it wanted to be back in August at the start of practice – the 2009 NJCAA National Tournament. Barton earned the school’s 2nd-ever trip there with a 4-2 win over host St. Louis-Meramec Saturday afternoon in the Plains District Championships. Barton had defeated Laramie County (Wyom) Friday, 2-1, to advance to play Meramec and the right to move on the NJCAA Championships in West Windsor, New Jersey in a little more than one week. The Cougars will take a 20-3 record to nationals, where they will take on 3rd ranked Schoolcraft College (Mich). Schoolcraft is 16-1-2. The game will be Thursday, November 19.
Barton volleyball season ends in Region VI semifinals with 22-12 mark
The Barton Community College volleyball team got off to a great start in the Region VI Championships over the weekend in Dodge City but couldn’t close the deal, going 2-2 and being eliminated the semifinals. Barton won the opening two matches at the Civic Center – including an upset of the top seeded Seward County Saints – before losing the final two contests to finish 3rd. Hutchinson eventually won the event and qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament.
Barton men’s hoops starts season off with easy win
The Barton Community College men’s basketball team opened its 2009-10 season with an easy win over the Bethany College JV Tuesday night. The Cougars rolled to a 113-50 win over the Swedes at the Barton Gym. Barton put six players in double figures in the win and shot better than 50 percent for the contest. The Cougars will get back-to-back contests this weekend when they travel to Liberal to take part in Seward County’s Pepsi Classic. Barton will play Hesston on Friday and the Colorado Kings Saturday. Both games will tip at 4 pm in the Greenhouse.
Cougars defense smothers Bethany JV in 59-28 win
The Barton Community College women’s basketball team won its season opener Tuesday night at the Barton Gym with some stingy defense in a 59-28 win over the Bethany College JV. Barton allowed Bethany just 6 field goals all night long and forced 40 turnovers to start the 2009-10 campaign off successfully. It also started the career of new Barton Coach Keith Ferguson off on the right foot. Barton will go on the road for the 1st time this weekend when the Cougars travel to Fort Scott for take on the Jayhawk East foe. The Cougars will be back at home Monday to battle the Friends JV in a 5 pm start.
Barton men's soccer captures Region VI title for 2nd time in 3 years
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team took a huge step toward its goal of an NJCAA Tournament appearance with the school’s 2nd Region VI in the past 3 seasons. Barton won the championship game 2-1 over Cloud County Sunday at Hummer Park in Topeka. The Cougars moved into the semifinal contest when a pair of ranked teams did battle in the semifinals with the No. 9 Cougars shutting out No. 13 Garden City by a 3-0 score. The Region title is Barton’s 3rd in school history. The Cougars will need to win 2 more games this weekend in order to earn the school’s 2nd NJCAA Berth. Barton will take on Laramie County (Wyom) Friday at 1 pm in St. Louis in Plains District action. The winner of that contest gets host St. Louis-Meramec Saturday in a 2 pm start with the winner of game advancing to the NJCAA Tournament in New Jersey later this month.
Barton showdown with Garden set; beats Cowley in Region VI opener 4-1
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team took care of business Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium in Great Bend with a 4-1 win over Cowley to start Region VI post-season play. The win set up a semifinal showdown between men’s soccer rivals Barton and Garden City. The two met in an epic championship game last year in the region with Garden winning on penalty kicks after the two teams battled 1-1 through two overtimes. Garden moved into the semifinals with a 3-2 overtime win over Kansas City Kansas. The battle will take place Halloween night in Topeka at 6:30.
Barton rolls into semifinals with win over Coffeyville
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team moved into the semifinals of the Region VI Championships with a 6-0 win over Coffeyville Monday. Barton won the opening round contest of the post-season at Cougar Fields in Great Bend in dominating fashion as Coffeyville failed to get off a shot the entire contest. The win gives the Cougars a 16-3 record and pits them against Butler in the semifinals Saturday at Hummer Park in Topeka. Barton is the No. 2 seed in the event while Butler is the 3rd seed. All of the top 4 seeds moved into the semifinals with 1st round wins.
Barton wins at Colby to move to 7-3 in Jayhawk
The Barton Community College volleyball team struggled in the opening set but cruised after that winning over Colby in Jayhawk West action at the Community Building in Colby Wednesday night. Barton lost the opening set 23-25 then cruised 25-13 25-17 25-15 for the conference win. Coupled with a home win over Dodge City last week the Cougars are now 7-3 in the Jayhawk and 19-8 overall. Barton has 3 regular season games left – all at home. The Cougars will start that stretch Friday when Independence comes to the Barton Gym for a non conference battle.
Men's soccer end regular season with 7-3 win; hosts Cowley to open Region
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team closed down the 2009 regular season with a 7-3 win over Allen County Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. Barton finished the regular season with a 15-3 mark and has moved up to No. 9 in the latest NJCAA rankings. Barton finished 2nd in the Jayhawk Conference and will take the No. 2 seed into the Region VI playoffs next week. Barton will open 1st round action at home when Cowley visits the Cougars Tuesday. The contest will be played at Memorial Stadium at Great Bend High School with kickoff set for 7 pm.
Women's soccer wraps up regular season with 12-0 blanking of Allen
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team ended its regular season in impressive fashion, posting a 12-0 win over Allen County to conclude the season with a 15-3 record. Barton finished 2nd in the Jayhawk Conference and will take the No. 2 seed into the Region VI playoffs next week. Barton will host Coffeyville Monday to open post season action. The contest will get started at 2 pm at Cougar Fields on the campus of Barton.

The Barton Community College women’s soccer team wrapped up the 2nd seed in the upcoming Region VI playoffs and at least a share of 2nd place in the Jayhawk Conference. The Cougars did so Saturday in a battle of 1-loss conference teams when Barton edged Butler 4-3 at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. Earlier in the week Barton won a 7-0 contest at Garden City. Barton is now 14-3 overall and 9-1 in the West while Butler falls to 12-5-1 and 7-2. Barton has just one game remaining in the regular season as Allen County visits Cougars Fields Tuesday for a 2 pm kick off.
Barton wins 4-0 at KCK; secures No. 2 seed in Region VI playoffs
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team ran locked down the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Region VI playoffs with a 4-0 win at Kansas City Kansas Friday night. The Cougars scored 3 2nd half goals to put the game away at Swope Park in Kansas City. Barton has just one game left in the regular season and holds the tiebreaker with Garden for 2nd if the two teams should tie. Barton is 9-1 in the region with only a contest against Allen County Tuesday while Garden is finished at 9-2. Johnson County, 10-0-1, will be the No. 1 seed.
Cougars score big Jayhawk win in Garden, 1-0 in men's soccer
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team bounced back from its 1st loss in Jayhawk Conference play in nearly 5 years with a big win at Garden City Wednesday night in a battle of ranked teams. The No.14 Cougars moved to within a game of locking down the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Region VI playoffs with a 1-0 win over defending Region VI Champion No. 13 Broncbusters. The win moved Barton to 13-3 overall and 8-1 in Region VI. Garden City falls to 11-3 and 7-2. Barton can secure that 2nd spot win a win over KCK Friday in Kansas City. Barton is now 41-1-2 in its last 44 Jayhawk games.
Cougars go 4-1 in non conference contests
The Barton Community College volleyball stepped out of Jayhawk West play this past weekend, winning 3 of 4 games at the Central College Tournament in Columbus, Nebraska then made it a 4-1 stint outside the West with an easy home win over the Friends JV Monday night. The Cougars are now 17-8 overall this season with a handful of games still remaining including 4 important West games. Barton will play the 1st of those 4 West games Thursday at the Barton Gym when the Cougars host Dodge City at 6:30 pm.
Cougar women earn big Jayhawk soccer win over Johnson; Bernardes ties assist mark
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team scored one of its biggest wins of the season this past weekend with a 5-2 win over Johnson County in Jayhawk Conference action. The Cougars exploded for 4 1st half goals in the road win at Overland Park, which kept the Cougars in the hunt for the Jayhawk Conference title. Barton is now 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the Jayhawk. Hutchinson leads at 8-0 with Butler 6-1 and Johnson 8-2.
Barton’s 42-game Jayhawk unbeaten streak ends with loss at Johnson
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team saw a long unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday in Overland Park. It was the 1st time in 43 Jayhawk conference games that Barton lost when Johnson County scored a 2-1 win over the Cougars. Barton was 40-0-2 since a 2-0 loss to Dodge City to end the regular season back in 2004. The win put Johnson in the driver’s seat for the Jayhawk Conference title at 8-0-1 mark in the conference and just one conference tilt remaining. Barton fell to 6-1 and has a big battle with 6-1 Garden City Wednesday night in Garden.
Barton men's soccer impressive in 4-1 win over Mavericks
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team turned in an impressive effort Thursday night on the turf at Great Bend High School with a 4-1 win over Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa. The No. 10 ranked Cougars handed the Mavericks – ranked most of the season – just their 4th loss of the year. Barton has now won 10 straight games and improved to 12-2 on the season. The Cougars will be on the road Saturday for a contest that will go a long ways to deciding the Jayhawk Conference Champion this season when they travel to Johnson County. Barton is currently riding a 42-game Jayhawk Conference unbeaten streak that has seen Barton to 40-0-2. Johnson and Barton are the only two unbeatens in the conference with Garden City close behind with just 1 loss.
Barton women's soccer steps out of conference to roll by Mavericks 7-0
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team stepped outside the Jayhawk Conference Thursday night, rolling to a 7-0 win over Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa at Memorial Stadium on the campus of Great Bend High School. Shala Giardini continued her goal scoring spree with 5 more goals giving her 46 on the season. The win moved Barton to 11-3 on the season while the Mavericks fell to 7-9. Barton is back in Jayhawk play Saturday at Johnson County.
Barton volleyball drops West contest at Pratt
The Barton Community College volleyball team lost a key match in the current battle for 2nd place in the Jayhawk West with a setback at Pratt Wednesday night at Lesh Arena. Barton, Pratt, and Hutchinson all entered the night with 2 conference losses while Seward leads the race as an unbeaten. The Cougars lost at Pratt in three very close sets, 25-22, 26-24, 25-23 to fall into 4th place in the West standings. Barton is now 5-3 in the West and 13-7 overall while Pratt moves to 6-2 and 12-10. Barton will step out of conference this weekend to travel to Columbus, Nebraska for tournament action.
Cougar volleyball back on winning track with West win at Garden
The Barton Community College volleyball team is back on the winning track in Jayhawk West action with a easy 3-set win at Garden City this past weekend. The Cougars rolled to a 25-9, 25-11, 25-14 win over the Broncbusters to snap a 2-game West skid after a 4-0 start. Barton is now 5-2 in the West and 13-6 overall while Garden City falls to 1-5 in the West and 4-17 overall. Barton will be back in action Wednesday when the Cougars travel to Pratt for an important West battle between 5-2 teams in the conference and tied for 2nd.
Barton women's soccer falls to Hutch in battle of Jayhawk unbeatens
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team lost its first conference game of the season in a battle of Jayhawk Conference unbeatens in Hutchinson Friday, 3-1. Shala Giardini scored Barton’s only goal of the game, giving her a nation-leading 41 on the season .The Cougars fall to 7-1 in Region VI action and 10-3 overall. Hutch is now one of 2 unbeatens remaining with an 8-0 region record. The Blue Dragons are also unbeaten overall at 10-0-1. Barton will be back on the field Thursday when they host Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa in non conference play. The game will be at Great Bend High School’s Memorial Stadium at 6 pm.
Volleyball loses 1st West matches of the season
The Barton Community College volleyball team had its unbeaten run in the Jayhawk West snapped with road losses to Seward County and Hutchinson. The Cougars lost in Liberal over the weekend then fell to Hutchinson Wednesday. Between those setbacks was a non conference win for Barton over Clarendon (Texas) in Liberal Saturday. Barton lost to Seward in Liberal 18-25, 19-25, 28-26, 25-16 for its 1st West loss then rebounded for the a 25-12, 25-15, 25-18 non conference win over Clarendon later in the day. The Cougars traveled to Hutch Wednesday where they lost to the Blue Dragons 22-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-14 to fall to 4-2 in the West and 12-6 overall. Barton will be at Garden City Saturday for more West play.
Cougars battle past Cloud in men's soccer for Jayhawk win; winning streak at 9
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team captured a physical battle Wednesday in Concordia for a 4-1 win over Cloud County. The win kept Barton unbeaten in both the Jayhawk (6-0) and Region VI (7-0). The No. 11 ranked Cougars are 11-2 overall and winners for 9 straight games. Barton will get nearly a week off before host Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa in a night game at Great Bend High’s Memorial Stadium Thursday. The game will pit a pair of ranked foes with Northern Oklahoma carrying a No. 12 ranking into the 8 pm contest.

The Barton Community College men’s soccer team had an easy afternoon Monday, rolling to an 11-1 win over Hesston in Region VI action at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. During that contest, sophomore Harry Newman booted in 5 goals to set a school record for the Cougars. Friday night Barton won 5-0 in Jayhawk Conference action over Neosho at Great Bend’s Memorial Stadium when Kevin Ellis scored 4 times. The Cougars are now 10-2 overall this season and 6-0 in the region. Barton will look to keep that unbeaten Jayhawk mark alive at Cloud Wednesday.
Giardini breaks school mark with 6 goals in win over Hesston
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team rolled to an easy 12-0 win over Hesston in Region VI play in a contest that saw freshman Shala Giardini shatter the school record for goals in a season. Giardini scored 6 times in the win to break a tie she had with Yesenia Garcia, who scored 28 goals just last year. The 6 goals give Giardini 34 on the year with at least 8 more games to be played this year by the Cougars. Giardini had tied the mark in a 3-0 win over Neosho Friday night at Memorial Stadium at Great Bend High School. Barton is now 9-2 overall this year and 7-0 in Region VI play. Barton will take to the road for the next 2 games, traveling to Cloud County and Hutchinson.
Volleyball still unbeaten in West play after win over Garden
The Barton Community College volleyball team remained unbeaten in Jayhawk West action this season with a home win over Garden City Wednesday night. The Cougars had little trouble with the Broncbusters, winning 25-9, 25-12, 25-12 to move to 4-0 on the year in the West and 11-4 overall this season. Earlier in the week, Barton won at the Friends JV, 20-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-15. The Barton Community College men’s soccer team hung on for a hard-fought Jayhawk Conference win Tuesday at Cougar Fields, edging Coffeyville by a 2-1 score. The Cougars win was the 6th in row and kept them unbeaten in the Jayhawk Conference with a perfect 4-0 mark. The Barton Community College women’s soccer team scored a 10-0 win over Coffeyville Tuesday at Cougars Fields to remain unbeaten in Jayhawk Conference play. The Cougars strung 6 goals together in a matter of 10 minutes in the opening half as they cruised to the easy. It was the 2nd time this year Barton has reached double digit goals in a game.
