Dietary Manager Certificate Program

The Dietary Manager Certificate Program is designed for individuals who would like to be employed as a manager in food service at nursing homes, schools, correctional facilities, and hospitals. Students in the program will gain knowledge and experience in food preparation and management, nutrition therapy and human resource management. Training is available through both live (face-to-face) classes as well as online coursework via Barton's website - www.bartonline.org.

To qualify for the Dietary Manager program, a student must be endorsed by both a facility and a preceptor who is a Registered Dietitian (RD). Students will complete 120 hours of classroom studies and 150 hours of field experience. The RD will serve in cooperation with the lead instructor to provide the field experience training. Field logs will be required and must be completed.

Completion of the Dietary Manager coursework qualifies a student for the national credentialing exam.  Certified Dietary Manager, Certified Food Protection Professionals (CDM, CFPP) are nationally recognized as experts in managing dietary operations.

Barton-KSU Partnership

Barton Community College (Barton) and Kansas State University (K-State) have partnered together in offering educational programs in the field of dietetics. Barton offers an Associate of Science degree in dietary management or pre-dietetics. K-State offers a Bachelor of Science degree in the field of dietetics. Articulation agreements have been formed guaranteeing a student seamless transition from each academic program and between the institutions. Each piece of the program is designed to build upon the other.

Students earning the Dietary Manager credential are set to immediately enter the Associate of Science degree program in dietetics. Those students earning an Associate of Science degree can then immediately begin work towards a Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics. The flexibility of the program allows a student to achieve their educational goals while continuing to work in the field.

Barton also offers an Associate of Science in Pre-dietetics. This degree is set up for students who are interested in the Bachelor of Science in Dietetics but do not meet the field experience requirements to complete the dietary manager coursework.  Students earning an Associate of Science degree can then immediately begin work towards a Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics.

The program conveniently offers the coursework via distance education - online classes! Barton offers coursework via their website, BARTONline. K-State's online course management system is K-State Online.

The World of Dietetics

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are professionals who translate the science of food and nutrition to enhance the well-being of individuals and groups. Many dietitians work in health care facilities such as hospitals and extended care facilities. Dietitians also may be found working in public health settings, school foodservice, pharmaceutical companies, with commodity groups like the Dairy Council or the Beef Council, in private counseling practice, etc. The list goes on and on! The broad range of opportunities for practice within dietetics provides RDs with maximum flexibility as they move through their professional careers.

With growing public interest in nutrition and wellness, the demand for dietitians continues to exceed supply. The Bureau of Labor Statistics cites dietetics as a field of opportunity in the coming decade. Dietetics offers students the chance to combine their interest in food and nutrition with the privilege of meeting the needs of individuals or groups desiring to maintain, improve, or restore health in all stages of the life cycle. RDs are the only health professionals trained specifically in foods and nutrition, and thus are viewed as the nutrition experts.
